Warm, cozy, and so soft! This pattern includes mosaic knitting to create adorable little "walnuts" that dance across the cowl. The rows of walnuts are nestled between cozy stripes of moss stitch in earth tones of gold and walnut brown.

This ode to the walnut cowl pattern includes instructions for dying your yarn with acid dye or get right into the knitting with the commercial yarn suggestions. The pattern includes a mosaic chart, but also has the knitting instructions written out for each row so you can follow the pattern according to your preference.

Knitting Needles

U.S. 8 (5 mm) 16" circular knitting needles, or size needed to achieve gauge.

Materials

  • Darning needle for weaving in ends
  • Stitch markers

Size & Gauge

  • Finished Cowl measures 24" (~61 cm)
  • Gauge is not essential for fit, but may affect required yardage.
  • 24 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm) stockinette

KnitPicks Swish DK (50g/123 yds.) one skein of each:

  • MC = Loam Heather
  • CC = Allspice
  • CA = White
  • CB = Honey

Handspun Yarn Suggestion

Yarn (3) DK/Light Worsted ~12 WPI, 100% Polworth Wool, 2-ply, 12 wraps/inch

  • Brown (MC) - 90 yards
  • Orange (CC) - 50 yards
  • White (CA) - 100 yards
  • Gold (CB) - 100 yards

If you would like to dye your yarn, instructions are included. You will need the following acid dyes

  • Jacquard Dye #633 "Aztec Gold"
  • Jacquard Dye #635 "Brown"
